Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies

The Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies (LALS Center) at Holy Names University was born in 2017 as a result of student demonstrations in defense of the Latin American & Latinx Studies major, Intercultural Peace & Justice Studies (IPJS) major, and other academic programs reflecting the rich diversity of our student body.

The LALS Center is a collaborative venture: a partnership between HNU students, the Asia Pacific Peace Studies Institute (APPSI), and the Center for Social Justice and Civic Engagement (CSJCE). Student activities and community events related to LALS are sponsored by CSJCE and student organizations, most notably Latinos Unidos. APPSI supports faculty-led activities—research and publication; curriculum development; presentations by scholars, artists, and thought leaders. Together, in 2021, we successfully revived LALS and IPJS academic programs under the new Ethnic Studies major!
